Shikoku Pilgrimage

What This Journey Is

The essence lies in becoming completely absorbed in the act of walking. Without concern for distance or time, simply advancing one step at a time. When we are liberated from the constraints of obligations, plans, roles, and thoughts of past or future, we return to our authentic selves.

The state of "KUU" (emptiness) taught by Kobo Daishi. It means to possess nothing and become no one in particular. Simply walk, wipe away sweat, and feel the wind. Set aside your smartphone and sense the earth through the soles of your feet. Such moments awaken dormant sensibilities within us.

Shikoku Pilgrimage Path

What Shikoku Pilgrimage Is — and Isn't

Temple Architecture

Many perceive the Shikoku pilgrimage as merely "temple visiting." However, the essence of this journey lies not in religion, but in spirituality itself.

You may visit temples, or you may not. You may stop at shrines, or simply walk through the wilderness. The esoteric Buddhism perfected by Kobo Daishi aims to discover the "Buddha" within yourself. Prayer is one method, not the objective.

Praying, walking, eating, conversing, enjoying—these are all the same. The circular pilgrimage route is Japan's most ancient pilgrimage path, uniquely designed as an endless circle where the journey itself, not the destination, holds meaning.
